Your Cheat Sheet to the Characters of AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR

The culmination of ten years and eighteen separate films, Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War will be an undertaking unlike any that has ever graced the silver screen.

But you are not excited. No, you are fearful. Because you have neither had the time or energy to catch up on a decade’s worth of movies. You haven’t memorized several dozen characters and their complex relationships. You are what one might call, “a normal healthy person.”

Not to worry. What follows is a cheat sheet, a who’s who of the most complex and interconnected cinematic universe ever made.

So, come next weekend, when you finally take your seat, and your uninformed friend leans over and asks who the purple guy is, you can be the one to roll your eyes and say, with complete confidence, “Ugh, that’s Thanos.” What sweet victory that will be.

Now, sit back, relax, and enjoy Your Cheat Sheet to the Characters of Avengers: Infinity War.

P.S. If you are (understandably) confused by the many acronyms and made up words, check out a brief vocabulary list at the bottom of the post.

Who are the Avengers (and what are they up to?)

Iron Man (The Head Honcho)

Who is he?

Let’s not pretend that you didn’t know about Iron Man at the very least. Robert Downey Jr. started it all, and the larger story has always followed him.

Behind the red and gold metal suit is Tony Stark, former alcoholic billionaire playboy, now workaholic billionaire superhero.

His first purpose on the team is to finance the whole operation, building them a nice skyscraper and a cool backwoods training base. Their tech upgrades and suits are also due (mostly) to Stark’s tech. Beyond his endless pot of cash, Stark is also the plot machine. Is something happening? Then it’s probably because he thought he had a good idea.

What is he up to?

A little bit of good, and a little bit of not so good. Stark invented nearly limitless renewable energy, stopped terrorists and war profiteers, and defeated a mad scientist. With the other Avengers’ help, he nuked an invading alien army (more on them later) and stopped an insane rogue A.I. program, Ultron, from blowing up the planet.

Except, Stark invented Ultron, and didn’t tell anybody. He also contributed to a giant international scandal that led to splitting the Avengers and the Civil War. So while he is definitely trying his best, he still has a lot to answer for. His first attempt was arming a fifteen-year-old kid from Queens who likes to crawl on walls. Hopefully, that’s a sign of growth.

Most recently, Stark has returned to his solo career, obsessively preparing for what he believes is the “end of all things.” We’ll see if he’s ready enough.

Captain America (The First Avenger)

Who is he?

Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers was the first Avenger. Formerly a sickly limp noodle from Brooklyn, Rogers was injected with a super soldier serum and became Captain America.

He’s the moral center of the group, providing an unshakeable view of justice. There is right, and there is wrong, and Rogers always knows which is which. He keeps the team on the straight and narrow.

More than this, Rogers is the team leader, with the charisma, empathy, and strategic mind to get all of the competing personalities of the Avengers in order.

What is he up to?

Rogers beat up some Nazis, saved the world, and then he was frozen in the Arctic for 70 years. After being thawed, he helped stop two massive international political conspiracies, both of which involved his also-man-out-of-time best friend James “Bucky” Barnes/Winter Soldier. All of this has forced Rogers to ask some tough questions and consider his moral position.

Rogers became disillusioned with the Avengers, the government, and his title as Captain America after his and Tony Stark’s Civil War over the regulation of the team. He gave up his famous shield and his mantle, but he didn’t give up the mission.

Most recently, Rogers took Barnes to Wakanda, the home of King T’Challa/Black Panther, to have his brain healed from decades of abuse. While Barnes heals, Rogers, his friend Sam Wilson/Falcon, and fellow ex-Avenger Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow have been covertly continuing the good fight, fighting terrorists and trying to make the world a better place.

Thor (The Hammer)

Who is he?

Chris Hemsworth is the Norse god of thunder/alien prince/beefcake Thor Odinson. The heir to the throne of Asgard, Thor travels around the Nine Realms hitting stuff with his hammer.

His role on the team is the expositor, and also to hit stuff. Who is this big bad guy? Ask Thor.

What is he up to?

Thor fell in love with Natalie Portman while on Earth for a couple days, then had to fight his throne stealing brother, Loki. Then he had to fight him again. Then he had to team up with him to fight another guy. Then he had to fight him again. Then he had to team up with him to fight another guy. That wasn’t a typo, it’s literally what he’s been doing for the past decade of film. In between that, he also brought Vision to life.

Most recently, his home planet was destroyed by his estranged sister and a giant evil monster, and now he’s in charge of a spaceship full of Asgardians, looking for a new home. Oh, and he lost an eyeball and his hammer. Rough stuff.

Bruce Banner/Hulk (The Conscience/The Big Gun)

Who is he?

Mark Ruffalo is Bruce Banner, better known as the Hulk. Big, loud, and green. What else is there to know?

Banner was a scientist studying gamma radiation, and due to a classic comic book lab accident, became the Hulk. His role on the team is two-fold: as a scientist, Banner helps Stark invent stuff, while also providing a more cautioned and moral-minded voice. As Hulk, he punches stuff.

What is he up to?

Banner spent a long time hanging out by himself and trying to be zen in South America, but couldn’t stay away from the green-eyed monster. He was recruited by the Avengers to help them find Loki, but proved to be more useful as a god-puncher.

Most recently, Hulk decided he was tired of Banner running the show, and stole a spaceship, became a space gladiator, and teamed up with Thor to fight a Norse space wolf.

Black Widow (The Spy)

Who is she?

Scarlett Johansson is Natasha Romanoff, a former Russian super-spy. Clint Barton/Hawkeye, an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., was sent to eliminate her and instead recruited her. Now she works for the Avengers, doing spy stuff.

Her role on the team is to spy, interrogate, and generally be a person. On a team with a billionaire superhero with a larger than life ego, a national icon super soldier, a god, and a Hulk, the human perspective is often overlooked. Her job is to keep them grounded and play devil’s advocate.

What is she up to?

Romanoff helped found the Avengers, recruiting both Stark and Banner. She defended New York from an alien invasion and later helped Steve Rogers uncover the corruption in S.H.I.E.L.D. at the hands (heads?) of HYDRA.

During the Civil War crisis, Romanoff joined Team Iron Man but ultimately betrayed them, assisting Rogers in escaping due to their close friendship. Accused of always being a double agent by Stark, Romanoff disappeared.

Most recently, Romanoff joined Rogers and Sam Wilson/Falcon in continuing the good fight on their own.

Hawkeye (The Dad)

Who is he?

Jeremy Renner is Clint Barton/Hawkeye, the red-headed step-child of the Avengers, the oft-forgotten, the “come along, afterthought.” This is no fault of Renner – it’s just that Barton is “the guy with the bow.”

Barton’s role on the team, other than to be an archer, is to provide a down-to-earth perspective that even Romanoff can’t provide. He is not a super spy, nor a superhero. He has no powers or dark backstory. He’s not particularly angry or vengeful or patriotic. Barton is just a guy trying his best.

It’s not actually clear if Barton will be in Infinity War. While he was on the original banner image, he has not received a character poster. It’s a safe bet that he will appear, though it’s not clear in what capacity.

What is he up to?

Barton helped defend New York from an alien invasion, defended families against evil A.I. robot minions, and became a father figure to Scarlet Witch. He also worked on his secret house with his secret wife and secret children. It was more adorable than mysterious.

During the Civil War conflict, Barton sided with Team Captain America, forcing him to fight his best friend Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow. Ultimately he was imprisoned for his actions.

Most recently, Steve Rogers broke Barton out of prison, and he officially retired to spend time with his family.

Scarlet Witch (The Angsty Witch)

Who is she?

Elizabeth Olsen is Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, the Avengers’ all around tortured personality. She and her twin brother were willing experimental subjects of HYDRA, gaining superpowers so they could seek revenge on Tony Stark for his complicity in war. Instead of revenge, they teamed up with him after the super evil insane rogue A.I. they were paling around with went overboard. Go figure.

Maximoff has an array of psionic, telepathic, and telekinetic abilities. Unfortunately, she is not in complete control, making her one of the Avengers’ most powerful but volatile members.

What is she up to?

After her twin brother, Quicksilver, died fighting Ultron, Maximoff decided to join the Avengers. She has a hard time handling her powers and feels very distant from everyone. As a result, she has begun to fall for Vision.

Most recently, she joined Steve Rogers against Tony Stark after being called dangerous one too many times. She was imprisoned with the rest of her team, and later freed by Rogers, leaving her teammates to join Vision in starting a new life.

Vision (The Angsty Android)

Who is he?

Paul Bettany is Vision, the former-computer-butler-turned-android. It’s just as confusing as you are imagining.

Tony Stark built an A.I. named Jarvis. Ultron built a body made out of super-valuable vibranium and human tissue and put the Mind Stone in his forehead. Stark stole that body and put Jarvis inside of its brain. Thor hit it with lightning and brought it to life.

Listen, there’s no way to explain that situation without it sounding completely bonkers. Just go with it.

What is he up to?

After the aforementioned mind-bending origin, Vision helped defeat Ultron and joined the Avengers. He and Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch grew close before he joined Stark’s team during the Civil War, believing it to be the most logical choice.

During the battle against Team Captain America, Vision accidentally shot James Rhodes/War Machine with a beam of energy, nearly killing him. This left Vision reeling, unsure how he could make a mistake, and questioning his place on the Avengers.

After Steve Rogers frees Maximoff from prison, he reunites her with Vision. Wanda and Vision move to Europe to begin a “normal” life.

Falcon (The Flying Guy)

Who is he?

Anthony Mackie is Sam Wilson/Falcon, a former Air Force pilot turned Veterans Affairs therapist turned Captain America’s right-hand man.

One of the newest members of the Avengers, Wilson uses prototype mechanized wings to provide air support to his team.

What is he up to?

After throwing in his lot with Steve Rogers in order to take down a corrupt clandestine agency, Wilson was invited to join the Avengers.

Wilson joined and was imprisoned with the rest of Team Captain America during the Civil War. After Rogers broke them out of prison, Wilson joined him and Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow in continuing the good fight on their own.

War Machine (Iron Man but With Guns)

Who is he?

Don Cheadle is James Rhodes/War Machine, a former Air Force Lieutenant Colonel and Tony Stark’s best friend.

Rhodes has essentially the same powers as Iron Man, just with less money and more guns.

What is he up to?

After helping Stark defeat terrorists and war profiteers, Rhodes assisted the Avengers in defeating Ultron. For his service, he was invited to join the team.

During the Civil War event, Rhodes joined Team Iron Man and was accidentally shot by Vision’s energy beam.

Now paralyzed, Rhodes began the long road to recovery with Stark’s help.

Who hangs out with the Avengers?

Spider-Man (The Fanboy)

Who is he?

Tom Holland is Peter Parker/Spider-Man, a seventeen-year-old kid from Queens who does his best to be a superhero after getting powers from a radioactive spider’s bite.

Parker is young and brash, but has a deep love for his city, and is committed to helping “on the ground” while the Avengers focus on aliens, gods, and magic.

What is he up to?

Parker was recruited by Tony Stark to join Team Iron Man during the Civil War event. In exchange for his services, Stark granted him a new suit and technology. Stark’s bodyguard Happy Hogan was assigned to watch and help guide Parker as he buds into a superhero.

Stark eventually invited Parker to join the Avengers but was turned down. Parker decided it was more important for him to continue to learn and stay grounded as a “friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.”

Doctor Strange (The Magic One)

Who is he?

Benedict Cumberbatch is Doctor Stephen Strange, a world-renowned surgeon who, following a near-fatal car accident, learned how to manipulate magical forces from an ancient order of sorcerers.

Strange is extremely competitive and arrogant, though he is undeniably skilled. He is Earth’s primary magical defense, utilizing his skills and meticulous style to defend against the darker elements of the multiverse.

What is he up to?

After dealing with a multi-dimensional evil, Strange became the Sorcerer Supreme, the leader of Earth’s magical defense. He also possesses the Time Stone within a mystical artifact called the Eye of Agamoto.

Most recently, Strange has begun his education into the Infinity Stones, including the mysterious and unaccounted for Soul Stone.

Black Panther (The King)

Who is he?

Chadwick Boseman is T’Challa/Black Panther, the king and defender of Wakanda. He gains increased strength, endurance, speed, and regeneration after consuming the vibranium-laced heart-shaped herb.

T’Challa is tactical and holds a deep sense of duty to his people. He uses his own abilities and the immense technological prowess of his people to improve the world.

What is he up to?

After witnessing his father’s murder, T’Challa hunted down the presumed killer James “Bucky” Barnes, an ex-Soviet agent and Steve Rogers’/Captain America’s oldest friend. T’Challa joined Team Iron Man during the Civil War conflict, though he ultimately helped to clear Barnes’ name and find the true killer.

Now the King of Wakanda, T’Challa began the difficult process of ruling. After fighting to keep the throne, he decided to open the borders of his country to the world, pledging to lead the world into a new age of peace and progress.

White Wolf (The Angsty Cybernetic Arm)

Who is he?

Sebastian Stan is the James “Bucky” Barnes/White Wolf, formerly the Winter Soldier, a HYDRA super soldier kept alive since the 1940s through cryogenic freezing.

Before he became a super soldier, Barnes was Steve Rogers/Captain America’s best friend. After falling to his death, HYDRA rebuilt Barnes’ body and brainwashed him.

With HYDRA training, a variation of the super soldier serum, and a cybernetic arm, Barnes became a ruthless killer

What is he up to?

Rogers discovered Barnes was alive and brainwashed after Barnes tried to assassinate the leader of S.H.I.E.L.D., Nick Fury. Rogers was able to get through to his friend, and Barnes went into hiding.

After being framed for killing T’Challa/Black Panther’s father T’Chanka, the King of Wakanda, Barnes convinced Rogers to help him clear his name. This began the Civil War conflict, ending with Tony Stark/Iron Man learning that Barnes had murdered his parents several decades before while under the Winter Soldier brainwashing.

Barnes was imprisoned along with the rest of Team Captain America but was freed by Rogers. He then volunteered to go into cryogenic sleep in Wakanda under the watchful eye of T’Challa and the care of his genius sister, Shuri.

Most recently, Shuri managed to “reboot” Barnes’ brain and clean him of his brainwashing. Now a new man, Barnes has been given the name White Wolf and continues his training in Wakanda.

Loki (The Scorned Brother)

Who is he?

Tom Hiddleston is Loki, trickster god of the Norse and Thor’s brother, adopted by their father Odin at a very young age. Loki competed, at least in his own mind, with his brother for the spotlight, their father’s praise, and their mother’s love. Now as adults, Loki and his brother have a complicated relationship, to say the least.

While Loki possesses illusory magic, his greatest weapon is his mind. He is cunning, ruthless, and is usually playing a game much larger than the players know.

What is he up to?

After plotting to banish Thor from their homeworld of Asgard and take the throne for himself, Loki was defeated and presumed dead.

In reality, Loki ended up in the court of Thanos, the Mad Titan (more on him later). He struck a deal with him to become ruler of Earth – but it didn’t work out so well.

Loki was imprisoned and later freed by his brother to defeat another bad guy, then faked his death (again), and took the throne (again).

After being found out (again), Loki ended up helping Thor defeat another bad guy (again). They worked out their issues and made amends, both planning on returning to Earth to rebuild Asgard there. Happy ending.

Except that unbeknownst to Thor, Loki had managed to sneak the Space Stone out of Asgard, one that Thanos wanted badly. Good thing too, since most recently, the ship Loki, Thor, and the rest of the Asgardians were on was stopped by Thanos.

Star-Lord (The Loveable Space-Jerk)

Who is he?

Chris Pratt is Peter Quill/Star-Lord, a half-human space outlaw who was abducted from Earth in 1988.

Quill is the leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy, relying less on skill and intellect and more on sheer dumb luck and a misplaced sense of confidence to succeed.

He has a deep love for music, specifically the mixtapes that are his only connection from his little time on Earth pre-abduction.

What is he up to?

Quill and the Guardians stopped a space terrorist from using one of the Power Stone to destroy a planet, leaving it in the possession of space-cops.

This put the Guardians on the map, continuing to do “Something good? Something bad? A little bit of both.”

Most recently, Quill came into conflict with his father, an immortal and celestial being obsessed with terraforming the galaxy to his own image.

Gamora (The Jilted Daughter Assassin)

Who is she?

Zoe Saldana is Gamora, the lead assassin and favorite daughter of The Mad Titan Thanos. Adopted by him after Thanos destroyed her entire race, he molded Gamora into a living weapon.

Gamora has a deep hatred for her adopted father that, combined with her tortured and weaponized background, makes her quick to violence and lacking in trust.

She has a complicated relationship with her adopted sister and fellow assassin Nebula.

What is she up to?

After her father lent Gamora to a terrorist, she became a fugitive, no longer able to stand to live under Thanos’ rule. She came into contact with Peter Quill/Star-Lord and the other future Guardians of the Galaxy, ultimately deciding to join them.

After defeating the terrorist and reclaiming the Infinity Stone, Gamora and the Guardians went after Nebula. She was able to capture her sister, and after battling a living planet, they made amends.

Most recently, Gamora invited Nebula to join the Guardians.

Drax the Destroyer (The Earnest Meathead)

Who is he?

Dave Bautista is Drax the Destroyer, an alien warrior seeking vengeance for the murder of his wife and daughter.

Drax’s species is very literal, so he is very truthful to a fault and often misses the nuance of language.

What is he up to?

Meeting the other future Guardians of the Galaxy in prison, Drax joined them in ending the terrorist responsible for his family’s tragedy. He then declared the Mad Titan Thanos as his true target and continues to travel with the Guardians toward that goal.

Rocket Raccoon (The Gun Nut) & Groot (The Living Tree)

Who are they?

Vin Diesel is Groot. Groot is a big living tree and has a heart of gold. He can only communicate through the following: “I am Groot.”

Bradley Cooper is Rocket, a genetically modified and sentient raccoon. His very short temper mixed with his inventive ability and adoration of guns and explosives makes him unpredictable and dangerous.

What are they up to?

Groot died saving the Guardians in their first major battle. However, his “son” was born from the remains of his tree-like body, and now “teenage” Groot continues to travel with his “fater’s” companions.

Rocket originally joined the Guardians to make money but stayed with them out of a sense of kinship.

Nebula (The Jilted Sister Assassin)

Who is she?

Karen Gillan is Nebula, the adopted daughter of Thanos and sister to Gamora. Like her sister, Nebula is a trained assassin, enhanced with cybernetics. She also shares a deep hatred of their father.

What is she up to?

Nebula fought against the Guardians at the directive of her father, but after an intense battle with her sister forgave her and switched sides. Nebula decided not to stay with the Guardians, and instead pursue her revenge against Thanos.

Mantis (The Emotional One)

Who is she?

Pom Klementieff is Mantis, an alien with empathic abilities. She can sense others’ feelings and manipulate their emotions through touch.

What is she up to?

Mantis was a slave to Peter Quill’s father, helping him sleep with her empath abilities.

Most recently, she helped the Guardians defeat Quill’s father, and decided to join them.

Who is the villain?

The Mad Titan Thanos (The Big Purple Guy)

Who is he?

Josh Brolin is Thanos, the Dark Lord, the Mad Titan, the “most powerful being in the Universe.” He is well known and feared throughout the universe, due not only to his own vast powers, armies, and cruel nature, but also his goal: to destroy half of all life, in a quest to seek balance.

You might know him as the big purple guy from Avengers, Age of Ultron, and The Guardians of the Galaxy.

What is he up to?

Thanos is after the Infinity Stones. In a quest to obtain the Space Stone, he made a deal with Loki and helped him invade New York City with an army of aliens.

But that didn’t go so well, so he lent out his assassin daughters to a space terrorist to obtain the Power Stone. Once again, it didn’t work out.

So Thanos decided to take things into his own hands. Most recently, he parked his very large and scary ship right in front of Thor and Loki, to a fate unknown.

*Takes a deep breath* So who are these other people?!

Okoye (The Badass)

Who is she?

Dana Guerrero is Okoye, the leader of the Dora Milaje, the Wakandan royal guard and special forces. An incredibly competent warrior, she fought alongside T’Challa/Black Panther to retake the throne of Wakanda.

Shuri (The Genius)

Who is she?

Letitia Wright is Shuri, T’Challa/Black Panther’s younger sister and lead engineer of Wakanda. She is a brilliant designer with an intellect rivaling that of Tony Stark/Iron Man. Most recently, Shuri was put in charge of “rebooting” James Barnes/White Wolf, to save him from his mind control.

M’Baku (The Wakandan Muscle)

Who is he?

Winston Duke is M’Baku, a tribal leader and warrior from Wakanda who aided T’Challa/Black Panther in retaking his throne.

The Collector (The Collector)

Who is he?

Benecio del Toro is Taneleer Tivan/Collector, a curator of interstellar lifeforms and artifacts. He is currently in possession of the Reality Stone, though his agenda remains a mystery.

Maria Hill (The Lieutenant)

Gwyneth Paltrow is Virginia “Pepper” Potts, the CEO of Stark Industries, Tony Stark’s former executive assistant, and his longtime girlfriend.

Happy Hogan (The Bodyguard)

Who is he?

Jon Favreau is Harold “Happy” Hogan, Tony Stark’s longtime friend, chauffeur, and former bodyguard.

Wong (The Cranky Librarian)

Who is he?

Benedict Wong is Wong, a sorcerer and former librarian who helps Doctor Stephen Strange keep the Earth safe from magical and multi-versal threats.

Valkyrie (The Drunken Warrior)

Who is she?

Tessa Thompson is Valkyrie, an elite Asgardian warrior long into retirement and self-exile. She has joined Thor and the remaining survivors of her people on a ship bound for Earth.

Heimdall (The Gatekeeper)

Who is he?

Idris Elba is Heimdall, the all-seeing guardian of Asgard. He assisted Thor in saving their people and is now traveling with him and their people to Earth.

Wait, what about those other two?

The next two members have not been officially confirmed for Infinity War nor featured in any of the marketing, though it’s a safe bet they’ll appear in one form or another.

Ant-Man (Comedic Relief)

Who is he?

Paul Rudd is Scott Lang/Ant-Man, a two-bit Robin Hood turned superhero.

Lang is out his element in the world of gods and magic, but soldiers on out of a sense of duty to his young daughter. As well as having the ability to shrink and speak to ants (seriously), he can also grow to gigantic size, fittingly called Giant-Man when in this form.

What is he up to?

Lang got his start when he was enlisted by former Ant-Man Hank Pym to help him bring down a corrupt scientific corporation and its supervillain CEO.

This put Lang on the map, leading Steve Rogers to recruit him to Team Captain America during the Civil War conflict.

Rogers broke his team out of prison after the conflict, and Lang was able to return to his daughter.

Nick Fury (The Eyepatch)

Who is he?

Samuel L. Jackson is Nick Fury, the former leader of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the man responsible for originally putting together the Avengers. Fury is believed dead by the world, but through his own decades-long curated personal network of spies and resources, has continued to help the Avengers.
