5 Theories & Questions About The Shocking Ending Of M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Split’

Below Contains Spoilers To Shyamalan’s ‘Split’, So Readers Beware

If you don’t know, now you know. M. Night Shyamalan has connected his iconic film ‘Unbreakable’ with the new release ‘Split‘. It comes as a surprise to viewers and raises some serious questions about what it all means.

With this “Shyamalan Cinematic Universe” building, this could mean a massive change for his career and his projects as a whole. ‘Split‘ has only been out for a few weeks but there’s been so many theories and questions going around already.

I’ll breakdown some of the major inquiries and give my thoughts on each mind-blowing concept from the budding ‘Split‘ and ‘Unbreakable‘ universe.

Reminder, I will go into detail about the finale of ‘Split‘ and the future of films so proceed with caution if you haven’t seen the movie yet!

What do you think of the twist ending to ‘Split‘ and the connections to ‘Unbreakable‘?

Let me know in the comments below!

5. Where Do Kevin Crumb’s 24 Personalties Go Now?

Shaymalan

Split‘ ended with Kevin Crumb (James McAvoy) and his multiple personalties escaping before police could find him. He delivers a serious monologue between the different people living within him, debating how to change the world. The personas also all admire the work of the monstrous personality named “The Beast”. I expect a return of “The Beast” with all his powers! Also, how will personalites like Dennis and Patricia “change the world?”

I do hope to see more of the people living within Kevin Crumb because ‘Split‘ teased some amazing ones. This film showed us a fraction of what McAvoy can do with this character. I think fans can agree that we all want to see more Hedwig though!

4. How Does ‘Split’ Fit Into The ‘Unbreakable’ Universe?

Shyamalan

So right before the film ends, we see patrons of a cafe watching the news. They begin discussing how Kevin Crumb’s ridiculous story reminds them of a similar one years ago. They forget the name of the man involved; someone corrects with by saying “Mr. Glass”. Turns out, it’s David Dunn (Bruce Willis) from ‘Unbreakable‘!

This one moment thrust ‘Split‘ from just another M. Night Shyamalan film to the second step in a much-larger universe. Could Kevin Crumb and “The Beast” be the one to take down the indestructible and unbreakable David Dunn?

3. Will ‘Unbreakable’s David Dunn Hunt Down ‘Split’s Kevin Crumb?

Shyamalan

So the end happened and it blew so many people’s minds but what does it mean? With the look on David Dunn’s face and some statements Shyamalan has made, it seems like Dunn will be hunting down the villainous Kevin Crumb.

This could lead to an amazing confrontation in a later movie. It was recently confirmed that ‘Unbreakable‘ is getting a sequel so I expect to see this moment expanded on. Now the wait begins for ‘Unbreakable 2‘ to see if Kevin and David will face off!

2. Is There Other “Super Humans” Out There?

Shaymalan

For me, one of the biggest ideas I walked away with is the possibility of more of these “super humans”. After the release of the first two films in this universe, there’s a total of 3 special people introduced: the indestructible David Dunn (Bruce Willis) , the fragile Mr. Glass (Samuel L. Jackson), and the many personas of Kevin Crumb (James McAvoy).

There’s a strong chance there is more of them out in this world that Shyamalan is creating and I’m hoping to see every one of them. With three vastly different styles of super powers, what else could be introduced into this realistic superhero setting?

1. Are All Of The Shyamalan Films Connected?

Shyamalan

What if these aren’t the first two films in this “Shyamalan Cinematic Universe”? I started wondering if there’s more films in this universe.

Tying into my previous theory, what if the young boy’s ghost seeing ability in ‘The Sixth Sense‘ is one of these superpowers? Could the freakish grandparents in ‘The Visit‘ be included into this universe? ‘The Village‘ could even live in this universe, given that film’s infamous twist! Hell, this could be a better explanation of why the main characters in ‘The Happening‘ were immune to the plant attack…

Now that there is confirmation that two of Shyamalan’s films are connected, some fans are going insane trying to piece together pieces that might not even be there.
