Indie Comics Spotlight: Bitch Planet, Descender, The Infinite Loop

It’s Tuesday night, and you’re excited for new comic book day! Tomorrow you will go into your local comic book store and pick up another arm-crippling stack of comic books to tear into as soon as you get home. Do you need more titles thrown onto your pile? Of course you do. Here are a few indie comics that are out now that you can grab tomorrow!

Bitch Planet 1

Bitch Planet – Kelly Sue DeConnick, Valentine De Landro

If you want one of the best [if not the best] independent monthly series, pick up Bitch Planet. The comic tells the story of a not-too-distant dystopian future in which women who are judged as “non-compliant” are sent to an off-planet prison known as “Bitch Planet.” Women who do not fit in with the societal standards constructed by men, or flat-out refuse those standards, are condemned to Bitch Planet by the oppressive patriarchal government. This book is the new, electrifying wave of feminism in comics. The second printing of the first issue was recently released, so it’s easy to jump into the series from the beginning. This title is perfect if you enjoy feminist literature, stories set in dystopian futures, punk rock, and really fantastic comic book writing and art. If Penny Rolle isn’t your hero, you’re reading it wrong.

Descender 1

Descender – Jeff Lemire, Dustin Nguyen

If you’re like me, and I know I am, you like stories about robots. Descender is the new ongoing science-fiction series by Sweet Tooth‘s Jeff Lemire. The story begins with the nine planets under the control of the United Galactic Council having their orbits invaded by The Harvesters, massive interplanetary robots that obliterate life from the planets and disappear. Life that remains works to purge their worlds of artificial intelligence and robots, but one companion robot boy, Tim-21, remains. Once he is discovered, it is believed that Tim-21 holds in his make-up the key to The Harvesters. Soon, Tim-21 is hunted by humans desperate for answers. The artwork in this book is hypnotic, and the story is beautiful thus far. It’s the perfect union of a great script and captivating artwork. This book is perfect if you like breath-taking art, stories about robots, the film AI that we deserved instead of the one we got, and good science-fiction.

Infinite Loop

The Infinite Loop – Pierrick Colinet, Elsa Charretier

This crowd-funded French series is now available in English through IDW. The story begins with Teddy, a woman who works hard correcting time paradoxes. At the end of the first issue, Teddy encounters a time paradox that challenges her: the woman of her dreams. What is Teddy willing to risk for true love? How will it affect time and space? The Infinite Loop promises to be an interesting adventure in love and time-travel. This title is perfect if you like time travel, dinosaurs, philosophical questions, queer fiction, and love stories.

Enjoy your Wednesday, everyone, and be sure to take a moment to pick up something new at your local comic book shop. If you pick up any good titles this week, let me know in the comments section below! Happy reading!
